Sydney fish market to scale new heights with $250 million makeover

The Tourism & Transport Forum Australia (TTF) has congratulated 3XN Architects on being awarded the contract to design the $250 million redevelopment of the Sydney Fish Market.

TTF Chief Executive Margy Osmond said the Copenhagen-based architects shared the vision of Sydney Fish Market and UrbanGrowth NSW to turn the markets into a truly iconic Sydney landmark.

“Sydney’s world-famous harbour deserves a world-class fish market,” Ms Osmond said.

“While the Sydney Fish Market is already the largest market of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and an institution for many Sydneysiders, there is no doubt it is time for an upgrade.

“The Fish Market attracts more than three million visitors a year and the new market is expected to double that to six million, which is fantastic news for Sydney’s visitor economy with many of those new visitors expected to be international tourists wanting to experience Australia’s fresh seafood.

“TTF has been a champion for the redevelopment of the Sydney Fish Market for a number of years and the industry is very pleased to see it progressing to the next stage with today’s announcement that 3XN will now start the design process.

“The redeveloped Sydney Fish Market is shaping up to be the jewel in the crown of a rejuvenated Bays Precinct.

“The activation of Sydney’s western harbours is going to be a fantastic addition to what Sydney has to offer, not just for locals but also for our growing international visitor market.”
