NEW YEAR’S EVE 2023 PLANS REVEALED WITH AUSTRALIANS FLOCKING TO WATCH FIREWORKS FOR FREE

Nearly 40% of Australians are keen to visit a free vantage point to watch the fireworks this New Year’s Eve, according to new research released by the Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) Australia, with cost-of-living pressures failing to dampen celebrations.

A national survey of 2,000 Australians, conducted by Pure Profile earlier this month, reveals where Australians are spending New Year’s Eve this year, which demographics are keen to watch the fireworks, what time they plan to arrive at free vantage points and more.

TTF CEO Margy Osmond said the tourism sector has high hopes for New Year’s Eve celebrations this year, with more Australians set to take advantage of free sites around the country.

“It’s wonderful to see so many Australians – especially young people – are planning to watch the fireworks and can celebrate without the heavy price tag, as more households feel the pinch from cost-of-living pressures,” Ms Osmond said.

“It’s a reminder to arrive at your vantage point early or you may miss out, and don’t forget to pack plenty of food, water and sun protection. It’s best to leave the car at home and use one of thousands of extra public transport services which will be running throughout the night.”

One in five Australians who are planning to watch the fireworks say they will arrive before midday to claim a free spot, with residents in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia the most inclined to camp out early.

“If you’re heading into the city, be prepared for crowds and start planning how you’re going to travel to and from your destination as early as you can. By being organised, you can help make this year’s celebrations as seamless as possible,” Ms Osmond said.

75% of Australians are spending New Year’s Eve in the city or town where they live, while 13% are celebrating elsewhere within their own state, 8% will be interstate and 4% will be overseas.

“No matter where you live, even outside our major cities, there are many ways to celebrate New Year’s Eve this year. There are so many great events that might be closer to home for families and friends to enjoy, such as those run by local councils,” Ms Osmond said.

“The tourism sector thanks all Australians for their support in creating a safe and enjoyable night for all, including our international visitors, who we’re glad have chosen Australia to help celebrate one of the biggest nights of the year.”
